Full meal available in Mumbai at Rs 12: Raj Babbar

NEW DELHI: Congress spokesperson Raj Babbar today said it was possible to have "full meal at Rs 12 in Mumbai" even today, a remark that drew sharp reaction from BJP, which dubbed it "laughable".

Babbar said this at the AICC briefing in response to a volley of questions as he tried to explain that poverty has come down even as prices have risen.

He was also asked about lower cutoff of expenditure limit to determine poverty and that how can the poor be able to have their full meal two times with a daily expenditure as low as Rs 28 or Rs 32 per day.

"People should have full meals two times a day. How one can have it is a very good question that you have asked. Even today in Mumbai city, I can have a full meal at Rs 12. No no not bada paav. So much of rice, daal saambhar and with that some vegetables are also mixed," he told reporters.

Babbar at the same time said that he was not saying it was fine.

Ridiculing the remark on a news channel, one of BJP's television panelists Lalita K Mangalam said it was "laughable" for the Congress spokesperson to have said it.

Shah Rukh Khan's advice to son: Don't break a girl's heart

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan defended Kolkata in the wake of rising number of crimes against women in the city. He said the whole world had issues when it came to the safety of women.

Shah Rukh Khan, who is the state's brand ambassador, said, "This is very personal. You can't pick on a city because it's easiest to blame the system...the whole country... the whole world actually has issues as far as safety of women is concerned."

The star also stressed the need to teach children to respect women.

"We can always turn around and say that it's sad...but I think the younger people... and I feel I am young...we must change the concept of how we bring up our children at home. The thing is the mentality of not telling the boys how to be gentle, and good and respectful. So I have started doing that," he told reporters during the promotion of his film Chennai Express Bollywood News in the city.

"When I talk to my son about girls, I don't talk about girlfriends. I tell him: 'Don't break a girl's heart, treat it gently and there is no way that you can look at an atrocity done on a women and if you do that you will not be forgiven by your father and mother'. So we should start from there," he said.

Downplaying the issue of surrogacy and his new born, SRK cleared the air by stating: "I didn't do it to promote surrogacy in the country...I did it to have a baby...I don't know how to explain that."

India retains 3rd spot in ICC T20 Rankings

Team India
Dubai: India held on to their third spot after the annual update of the ICC Twenty20 Rankings was announced today.

Sri Lanka have retained their position as the number one ranked team in the list.

The annual update was released just two days before Pakistan take on defending ICC World Twenty20 champions West Indies in a two-match series, in Kingstown, St Vincent.

At the June ICC Board meeting during the Annual Conference week in London, the ICC Board agreed to change the T20I rankings period from three years to four years.

The ICC Board also decided that the annual update to the Test, ODI and T20I rankings should now take place on May 1, rather than August 1, to better align with the current international calendar.

This change has been incorporated in the latest update, and has been backdated to May 1, 2013. The updated table now reflects all T20I matches completed after August 1, 2010. All T20I matches played until the start of May 2014 will be added to this table.

There are no ranking changes as a result of this annual update and most countries' ratings change by no more than a point or two.

14 out of the 16 countries with T20I status are ranked, with Afghanistan and Canada yet to play the required eight rated matches. Afghanistan need to play one more and Canada two more prior to May 2014 in order to join the rankings.

Meanwhile, Pakistan have an opportunity to move to the second place in the ICC T20I rankings table if they win both the matches against West Indies in the upcoming Indian Cricket News.

Fourth-ranked Pakistan are currently on 118 ratings points, but could potentially move up to second place with 124 ratings points, thereby swapping places with second-placed West Indies with 120 ratings points.

On the other hand, if West Indies win both the matches they could gain five ratings points to finish at 132, reducing the gap with number-one ranked Sri Lanka to just two ratings points.

FDA says menthol smokes 'worse' than normal cigarettes

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said it would seek consultation on possible restrictions for the products.

The agency said that while mint-flavoured cigarettes may be just as toxic as others, it was easier to start smoking them and harder to quit.

Menthol cigarettes are one of the few growing areas of the tobacco industry.
The FDA has commissioned further research into the subject.

It is inviting input from the health community, tobacco industry and members of the public about the products.

"Menthol cigarettes pose a public health risk above that seen with non-menthol cigarettes," said the preliminary results of the FDA's study.

It also found the cooling and anaesthetic qualities of the menthol made them less harsh - and more appealing - to smokers.

The report's conclusions echoed some of the findings of an earlier review from 2011, which suggested that a ban on menthol cigarettes would benefit public health.

But the tobacco industry has said that menthol cigarettes do not need to be subject to different regulations from normal cigarettes.

A group of former health officials, including two cabinet secretaries from the Carter and Bush Senior administrations, denounced the FDA's inaction.

"The failure of this administration to act undermines the public health and is particularly harmful to vulnerable young Americans and African-Americans," they said in a joint statement.

According to an earlier study from the US Department of Health only about 25% of white smokers choose menthol cigarettes, while more than 70% of African-American smokers use them.
